Herding

Herding

Sheep herding was developed in Scotland by shepherds who needed a way to move stock animals more efficiently around their farmland.  They were able to train dogs so successfully that they started competitions as a way to see who could train the most impressive farm dog.  These competitions have spread all over the world, and people of all ages can compete with their dogs up to the international level!  Both the AKC and the USBCHA have developed trials and titles for herding dogs.

Most novice level trials consist of your dog “fetching” the sheep and bringing them across the field back to you.  You will then proceed by navigating a designated course as your dog keeps the sheep walking along with you, until you reach the end of the course where you will use your dog to put the sheep up in a small pen.  As competitions advance, your dog will be expected to “drive” (a term for moving the sheep independently away from the handler) through a large open course while you stand at a post giving them directions until the end of the course where you will again pen the sheep as a team.

Instinct Tests

If you have never tried sheep herding, a great way to have an introduction to the sport is to have your dog’s instincts tested.  Here, Brian will work with your dog in a round pen to see how much "natural" talent your dog has.  Some dogs have natural “balance” where they want to stay on the opposite side of the sheep to bring them to you.  Other dogs may have more natural driving skills (moving the sheep away from you).  You and your dog don’t have to have any prior experience to participate in an instinct test!  This is a way for Brian to get to know your dog’s natural strengths and weaknesses and help you establish your training goals.

Private or Semi-Private Lessons

Lessons start out with your dog working sheep with Brian in the round pen, until he feels you are ready to take over the training.  Once you and your dog are moving sheep reliably in the round pen, Brian will help you move out into the pasture.  Semi-private lessons give you the chance to come out with a friend, which is a good way to split up your time so each dog has breaks in between working.  He will always take into consideration your dog's age, breed, and any physical limitations.

Because Brian owns his own sheep-related business, Ewe-niversally Green, he is not available every day of the week.   Please refer to our Calendar for Herding availability days.   To learn more about Brian, please check out our “About Us” page.

Please keep in mind that all services at the Ranch are by appointment only, so please call 678.493.8040 or email stay@thecanineranch.com to book your appointment.
