Nose Work is a new, yet rapidly growing, dog sport based on scent detection. The essential oils of birch, clove, and anise are used to test your dog’s ability to find specific odors. These oils were chosen because they are non-toxic and non-allergenic, and these three chemically-related compounds represent the skill level required of a law enforcement drug K-9. Trials are timed and involve searching containers, interior and exterior areas, and vehicles. Nose Work is an extreme mental workout for your dog, who uses more of his/her brain working scent pictures than we do on human vision! It is an amazing tool for building confidence and independent work ethic. All breeds and all ages are welcome. Many agility retirees are enjoying this sport, because it is low impact and safe for dogs who might not see as well or be as physically fit as they used to be.
Our instructor, Brenda Rehrig, is a Certified Nose Work Instructor with NACSW and competes with her two Border Collies at the NW3 level. For more information on our Instructor’s background, please see the "About Us" page. For class schedules or clinics, please see "Calendar".
In order for each dog and handler to have adequate working time, we limit our Nose Work classes to 4 students. By keeping our class sizes low we believe our students retain more, learn faster, and enjoy a more comfortable social environment as well. Beginner level (Intro to Nose Work) classes focus on building foundation skills primarily through “box work.” Intro to Odor classes introduce the dogs to working the scent of birch by an all-positive process of pairing, similar to motivational methods of drug training used by some of the most successful law enforcement training facilities today. Students can advance through higher levels as skills are attained and with instructor approval. Each session is 6 weeks long. Students of equal skill level may join class mid-session upon approval.
